Paulownia Reforestation Europe

The Paulownia tree is a true climate hero, growing fast and sequestering more carbon than any other tree. In 20 years, the paulownia sequesters over 40 times as much carbon as a European oak.

Since 2017, around 150,000 paulownia trees (also known as princess or emperor trees) have been planted on the plantation in the Sisak area of Croatia on around 300 hectares of property. The trees were planted on 100% reclaimed wasteland away from Croatia's tourist coastal resorts. The expert team tends and maintains the plantation with local labor.

The Paulownia reforestation project saves around 12,000 tons of CO2 per year, and each ton is also backed by an international carbon certifcate.

Important facts:

  • The 150,000 trees save approximately 12,000 tons of CO2 per year
  • The fastest growing trees in the world
  • Grow to a height of 12 meters in 10 years and have a diameter of about 40 cm.
  • Creation of jobs and apprenticeships for the local population
  • Fallow land is recultivated
