general information
How do climate protection projects work?
Climate protection projects save carbon through a measure at one place in the world. Thus, a carbon footprint that is created at location A can be saved by a climate protection project at location B. This can happen, for example, through reforestation. Forests are the second largest natural carbon sink on our planet. Another possibility is to generate electricity through renewable energies instead of fossil fuels. In this way, climate protection projects reduce greenhouse gas emissions and thus protect the climate. A climate protection project must demonstrate additionality, i.e. not only must the carbon savings be additional, it must also demonstrate financial additionality - i.e. it cannot be realized (becoming profitable) without the proceeds from the sale of the generated CO2 certificates.
All climate protection projects are certified and verified according to international standards. They are also verified by independent third parties.
The most common types of projects include:
Energy projects:
- Renewable energy
- Energy efficiency
- Fuel switching
carbon reduction or sequestration:
- Agriculture
- Peatlands
- Forests and forestry
Projects to reduce CO2 emissions from deforestation and forest degradation:
- REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation).
Other emission reduction projects:
- Waste and landfill gas
- Transportation
- Industry

More than just "a carbon sink”
Climate protection projects promote the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For example, they create jobs, fight poverty (SDG 1), promote affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), or contribute to decent work and economic growth (SDG 8).
Because CO2 is evenly distributed throughout the atmosphere, it does not matter where carbon emissions are offset. Therefore, climate protection projects are possible anywhere in the world. However, tree planting or forest protection projects are of enormous importance, especially in the Amazon region, in the tropics of Central Africa or even in Indonesia. As a result of deforestation and slash-and-burn agriculture, the rainforest area has decreased dramatically in recent decades. With nature based climate protection projects, priority is often given to the protection of existing rainforests and the expansion of protected areas, instead of reforestation. This is because reforestation often takes a long time until the trees are large enough to store carbon in larger quantities. In addition, the original complex ecosystem can only be partially restored with afforestation. Forest protection projects in the tropics are therefore not only important for the storage of carbon they are also of great importance for the protection of species, because unique ecosystems are thereby preserved.
