Compensate CO₂ consumption

«Guanaré»: Forest Plantations on degraded grasslands

According to the annual Global Forest Watch (GFW) report, 12 million hectares of tropical forest were lost in 2018. The sad leader in rainforest loss is Brazil, the Republic of Congo has lost 4800 square kilometres, followed by Indonesia with 3400 square kilometres. In Asia and Africa the main focus is on the cultivation of palm oil, in South America rainforest becomes agricultural land for the cultivation and production of grain for mass livestock farming, grazing land for cattle and the production of biofuels. Worldwide deforestation accounts for 10-12% of global CO2 emissions (greenhouse gas emissions).

offset/compensate CO2 now

Rainforests around the world absorb about 30 percent of the CO2 emissions (carbon emissions) caused by humans. Also the oceans are a gigantic CO2 sink.

The project consists of 22 plots of land over a total area of 20’800 hectares, which were previously used extensively as grazing land for livestock and is located in Cerro Largo in Eastern Uruguay. The project started 2006 and by 2011, the forest plantations for the production of high-quality and durable wood products had been built according to FSC standards. The afforested commercial forest consists of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus globulus (Blue Eucalyptus). Both can grow up to 50 meters high. Reforestation stores CO2 and extract it from the atmosphere. Over a periode of 60 years, the project will save 7'645’000 tons of CO2 more than 127’000 tons of CO2 per year.

Project activities:

  • Reforestation and management of forests and use of quality timber
  • Active cooperation/involvement with the local community
  • Training of agroforestry technicians and implementation of agroforestry projects

The project contributes to sustainable development:

  • creation of jobs related to forestry, more than 100 permanent jobs created
  • Training in forestry
  • Supports threatened habitats and preserves biodiversity
