What is EcoVadis?

EcoVadis is a globally recognised platform for assessing the sustainability performance of companies. Using a standardised questionnaire, EcoVadis assesses how companies are performing in the areas of the environment, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. The assessments help companies to achieve their sustainability goals, minimise risks in the supply chain and build trusting business relationships.

Sustainability criteria

There are 21 sustainability criteria used to assess the company. The questionnaire is tailored to the respective company based on these criteria, taking into account factors such as industry, size and location, as not all criteria are relevant to every company.

Documents

The documents to be submitted are essentially the core of the process and serve to verify the information provided in the questionnaire. These may include:

  • Sustainability reports (as separate documents or integrated into annual reports)
  • CDP Report
  • United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) – Communication on Progress
  • Employee handbooks
  • Code of Conduct
  • Regulations/policies (environment, water management, health & safety)
  • Target declaration for reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Management system certifications (e.g. ISO)
  • Eco-labels
  • Internal training materials
  • Greenhouse gas inventory (Corporate Carbon Footprint)
  • Publicly published KPI reports and monitoring of KPIs in internal systems (e.g. occupational accidents recorded in HR software)

General requirements for documents

  • All documents must bear the company name and logo.
  • Documents must have a clear date of issue. This must be more than one month prior to the submission of the questionnaire.
  • The documents must be valid for the following periods from the date of issue:
    • Policies: 8 years
    • Measures: 8 years
    • Reporting of quantitative KPIs: 2 years
    • External audits of sustainability reports: 2 years
    • Certificates: until the expiry date, if none available, 3 years

Document languages

In principle, all languages are accepted as long as the content is editable (copy/paste). Images and scanned documents are accepted in German, English, French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.
