Vision
Simple solutions for a climate positive world and a more habitable planet for human beings and animals.
Our Challenge
How does climate change influence the activities of an economy? What costs can be expected, and what responsibility does a business have in the struggle to appropriately deal with one of the greatest challenges for us and future generations, namely climate change?
Every investment in renewable energy contributes to a secure energy supply, reduces CO2 emissions and decreases our dependence on fossil fuels from abroad. It also improves the environment in a sustainable way and secures jobs. Protecting the climate is primarily about avoiding emissions at the domestic level - but we can make an additional contribution to climate protection by voluntarily offsetting greenhouse gases through projects abroad.
The 1.5 Degree Goal
Despite climate agreements, global CO2 emissions have continued to steadily rise since the mid-1950s. If the human-induced rise in temperature due to the greenhouse effect is not limited, this could have fatal consequences. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 Degrees Celsius, published in 2018, warns that a rise in temperature could trigger an uncontrollable chain reaction that would once again extremely accelerate the global greenhouse effect. Tipping elements are critical processes in the climate system that are set in motion by an increase in temperature, these are:
- Thawing of the permafrost in Russia
- Melting of the Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets
- Shrinking of the rainforests
- Dissolution of methane hydrates
- Reduction of CO2 levels in the oceans
In order to reach the 1.5-degree target, human-induced CO2 emissions must fall significantly before 2030 and reach net zero emissions beginning around 2050. Achieving this goal in such a short time requires, among other things, a shift from fossil energy to renewable energy sources.
According to the We Mean Business Coalition, thousands of companies have already committed themselves to formulating their climate targets in line with the Paris Accord and thus ideally limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees compared to the pre-industrial era. These companies want to be climate neutral by 2050 at the latest.
